Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera La Prosperidad de Chirinos was established in 1968 by a small group of 36 coffee producers in the district of Chirinos, located in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru. The organization was formed to overcome the logistical challenges of farming in remote Andean areas and to provide a collective structure for smallholder farmers to access international markets. Over more than five decades, it has evolved into one of the most stable and influential cooperatives in Peru, currently supporting over 800 members across the provinces of San Ignacio and Jaén.

The cooperative operates as a vital hub for its members, who typically manage small farms ranging from one to five hectares. By centralizing processing, quality control, and commercialization, the cooperative allows these smallholders to achieve economies of scale that would be impossible individually. The organization maintains its own collection, drying, and milling facilities, alongside a dedicated quality control laboratory, ensuring that the coffee produced meets the rigorous standards required for the specialty market.

Geographically, the cooperative benefits from the high altitudes of the San Ignacio region, which provide the ideal microclimate for cultivating high-quality Arabica coffee. The members primarily grow traditional varieties such as Typica, Bourbon, and Caturra, as well as Pache and Catimor. These coffees are typically processed using the fully washed method and are frequently certified as both Organic and Fair Trade, reflecting the cooperative's long-standing focus on environmental stewardship and social equity.

Beyond basic commercial services, La Prosperidad de Chirinos is deeply invested in the long-term resilience of its community. The cooperative provides extensive agronomic training and technical assistance to help farmers improve productivity and adapt to climate change. This includes innovative practices such as the 'gaicashi' composting system and programs for crop diversification, such as beekeeping and avocado farming, which help stabilize household incomes.

It actively promotes gender equality and youth engagement through dedicated committees, aiming to address historical gaps in leadership and ensure the next generation of farmers remains invested in the land.
