Catuai is a hybrid Arabica cultivar whose name is derived from the Tupi-Guarani language, meaning 'very good.' Its development began in 1949 at the Instituto Agronômico (IAC) in Campinas, Brazil, where researchers sought to combine the high productivity of the Mundo Novo variety with the compact, dwarf stature of Caturra. After decades of pedigree selection, the variety was officially released in 1972. This genetic lineage makes Catuai a 'granddaughter' of the classic Bourbon and Typica varieties, inheriting the vigor of its parents while offering a more manageable plant size for modern farming.

In the field, Catuai is prized for its dwarf growth habit, which allows for higher planting densities compared to traditional, taller Arabica varieties. The plant is notably wind-resistant, a trait that has made it a reliable choice for the varied topographies of Central and South America. Both red (Vermelho) and yellow (Amarelo) fruit selections are common, and the variety is known for its high yield potential, provided it receives adequate fertilization and consistent agricultural care.

Despite its agronomic advantages, Catuai is highly susceptible to coffee leaf rust, a significant challenge for producers in many regions. This vulnerability requires farmers to implement rigorous disease management strategies to protect their crops. Because of this susceptibility, the variety is often the subject of further breeding programs, such as the development of Catiguá MG2, which crosses Catuai with Timor Hybrid to introduce rust resistance while maintaining the cup quality associated with the Catuai lineage.

For the roaster and the consumer, Catuai is often described as the definition of a dependable coffee. Its cup profile typically features notes of chocolate, almond, and mild fruit with a medium body, making it a staple in high-quality espresso blends. When grown at higher altitudes in regions like Honduras or Costa Rica, the cup profile often shifts, exhibiting brighter acidity, cane sugar sweetness, and more pronounced red fruit characteristics.

Catuai’s economic impact is profound, particularly in Brazil and Honduras, where it accounts for a significant portion of national Arabica production. Its ability to produce specialty-grade coffee consistently has made it a favorite among producers who balance the need for high yields with the demand for quality. It has even achieved success at the highest levels of competition, including Cup of Excellence auctions, proving that a 'workhorse' variety can produce exceptional results under the right conditions.

Today, Catuai remains one of the most widely planted Arabica varieties in the world.
