Fazenda Sertão

Fazenda Sertão is a prominent coffee estate situated in the municipality of Carmo de Minas, in the Sul de Minas region of Brazil. The farm spans approximately 850 hectares, with 330 hectares dedicated to coffee cultivation, while the remainder of the land supports livestock and crops such as corn and bananas. The estate is defined by its high-altitude terrain, with coffee plots situated between 1,100 and 1,450 meters above sea level, where the cool climate and specific hillside planting techniques help protect the crops from frost and promote uniform fruit maturation.

The history of the farm is deeply intertwined with the development of coffee production in Carmo de Minas. The estate was inherited by José Isidro Pereira, who initially pursued a career in dentistry. Following the death of his mother, he returned to the land to manage the family legacy. This transition marked the beginning of a multi-generational commitment to coffee, with José Isidro and his wife, Nazareth, eventually passing the management of the farm to their children and grandchildren, including Francisco Isidro Pereira.

Fazenda Sertão is recognized for its commitment to quality and agricultural innovation. The farm cultivates a variety of coffee cultivars, including Red and Yellow Bourbon, Yellow Catucaí, and Yellow Catuai. The management team employs diverse processing methods, ranging from traditional naturals and pulped naturals to washed and natural fermented lots, allowing them to tailor their output to the specific characteristics of each harvest.

Agricultural practices at the farm are designed to maximize quality while respecting the challenging topography. Coffee trees are often planted on steep hillsides with slopes reaching up to 50%. This strategic placement not only mitigates the risk of frost but also aids in managing humidity levels around the trees, which helps prevent fungal infections and contributes to the development of the coffee's flavor profile, often characterized by notes of cocoa, praline, and a heavy, creamy body.

The farm maintains a strong reputation within the specialty coffee industry, frequently appearing on the tasting tables of international roasters. Its relationship with regional partners, such as CarmoCoffees, has been instrumental in bringing its micro-lots to a global market. The estate is often cited as a model for the region, representing the evolution of Brazilian coffee from large-scale commodity production to a focus on high-scoring, traceable specialty lots.
