Quick answer — what is Hélcio Carneiro Pinto?

Hélcio Carneiro Pinto is a pioneering Brazilian coffee producer based in Carmo de Minas, renowned for his early adoption of specialty coffee practices in the Mantiqueira region. His work at Fazenda Santa Lúcia and his role in founding the Association of Coffee Producers from the Mantiqueira Region (Aprocam) were instrumental in elevating the quality standards of Brazilian coffee for the global specialty market.

The real story

Hélcio Carneiro Pinto is a central figure in the development of the specialty coffee industry in the Mantiqueira de Minas region of Brazil. His journey began at age 15, when he started assisting his mother on the family estate, Fazenda Santa Lúcia. At that time, the regional coffee industry lacked a focus on quality, prioritizing volume over the nuanced profiles that define modern specialty coffee. It was not until the 1990s, as the global specialty market began to evolve, that Carneiro shifted his focus toward high-quality production.

In 1976, Carneiro married Glycia Pereira Carneiro and assumed management of Fazenda Santa Lúcia. Located in Carmo de Minas, the farm spans 740 hectares, with 100 hectares dedicated to coffee cultivation at altitudes ranging from 900 to 1,250 meters. Recognizing the need for collective advancement, Carneiro was a founding member of the Association of Coffee Producers from the Mantiqueira Region (Aprocam). This organization was established to bridge the gap between local farmers and scientific experts, facilitating the large-scale production of high-quality beans.

Carneiro is recognized as a pioneer in the region for his early adoption of advanced processing methods. He was among the first growers in the area to invest in the necessary infrastructure for pulped natural processing, a technique that has since become a hallmark of the region's output. His commitment to quality is supported by ongoing collaborations with universities and scientists, as well as international research trips to study coffee production in other origins.

Fazenda Santa Lúcia produces several notable coffee varieties, including Yellow Catuaí, Acaiá, and Yellow Bourbon. The farm is certified by the Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA), reflecting its adherence to rigorous production standards. The resulting coffees are frequently noted for their distinct sensory profiles, often characterized by aromas of baker’s chocolate, bright acidity, and notes of brown sugar and raisins.

The influence of Hélcio Carneiro Pinto extends to the next generation of his family. His son, Jacques Pereira Carneiro, has taken an active role in managing the family's coffee interests, including Fazenda Santa Helena. Under this leadership, the family has achieved significant recognition, including a second-place finish in the 2002 Brazilian Cup of Excellence and the Gold Cup of Excellence Special Award in the same year.

Today, the name Hélcio Carneiro Pinto is synonymous with the professionalization of the Mantiqueira region. By moving away from traditional commodity practices and embracing scientific rigor and specialty processing, he helped establish a blueprint for Brazilian producers to compete in the highest tiers of the global market. His legacy is defined by a transition from conventional farming to a quality-focused, entrepreneurial model that continues to influence the region's reputation.
