Inácio Urban

Inácio Urban is a foundational figure in the modern development of the Cerrado Mineiro coffee region in Brazil. Born into an agricultural family in the southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul, Urban relocated to Minas Gerais in the 1980s. At that time, the Cerrado region was largely considered undesirable for agriculture, but Urban identified its potential for large-scale, high-quality coffee production. He began his venture with a modest 20-hectare plot, gradually expanding his operations over four decades into what is now the expansive Fazenda Rio Brilhante.

Fazenda Rio Brilhante is situated in the Pântano micro-region, an area characterized by well-defined seasons and consistent rainfall, which provides an ideal climate for coffee cultivation. Today, the estate spans over 2,000 hectares, with more than 1,000 hectares dedicated to coffee production. The remaining land is balanced between native forest preserves and other agricultural crops such as cotton, beans, and corn, reflecting a commitment to land management and agricultural diversity.

The farm’s success is deeply rooted in the transition from a solo venture to a family-run enterprise. In 2006, Inácio’s children, Erika and Fernando Urban, joined the management team, later joined by his son-in-law, Noé. This generational transition has allowed the farm to maintain its focus on rigorous quality control while scaling its operations to meet the demands of the global specialty coffee market. The family’s approach combines traditional agricultural knowledge with modern, data-driven farming techniques.

Fazenda Rio Brilhante is particularly noted for its expertise in natural and pulped natural processing, which accounts for approximately 80% of the farm's total output. The farm utilizes mechanical harvesting, a standard practice in the region that, when executed with precision, allows for the efficient collection of cherries at their peak ripeness. The varieties cultivated on the farm include Bourbon, Catuai, Catucai, and Topázio, which are processed at altitudes ranging from 950 to 1,150 meters above sea level.

For roasters and consumers, the name Inácio Urban and the Fazenda Rio Brilhante tag represent a hallmark of consistency and quality in Brazilian specialty coffee. The cup profiles associated with the farm are frequently described as full-bodied and chocolatey, often featuring notes of dark chocolate, roasted almond, hazelnut, and various stone fruits. This reliability has made the farm a consistent partner for specialty coffee importers and roasters worldwide.

Beyond production, the farm has earned significant recognition for its commitment to sustainability and quality standards, holding certifications such as the Rainforest Alliance (RFA). The evolution of Fazenda Rio Brilhante from a small, experimental plot to a massive, high-output specialty estate mirrors the broader trajectory of the Cerrado Mineiro region, which has ascended to become one of the most important coffee-producing powerhouses in the world.
