At the time, common brewing methods involved boiling grounds directly in water or using ineffective linen bags, both of which resulted in unpleasant sediment and bitter flavors. Frustrated by these limitations, Bentz experimented in her kitchen by punching holes into the bottom of a brass pot and lining it with a sheet of blotting paper taken from her son’s school notebook. This simple, ingenious assembly allowed water to pass through the grounds while trapping the solids, producing a significantly cleaner and smoother brew.

Recognizing the commercial potential of her discovery, Bentz filed a patent for her 'Filter Top Device lined with Filter Paper' with the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin. The patent was granted on July 8, 1908, and she subsequently registered her company, M. Bentz, in the Dresden commercial register later that year. With a modest initial capital of 73 Reich pfennigs, she began manufacturing and marketing her filters, effectively launching a new category of coffee preparation that prioritized clarity and flavor control.

Bentz’s approach to business was as innovative as her invention. Rather than relying solely on traditional retail, she actively demonstrated the superiority of her filter system at trade fairs and department stores, allowing consumers to taste the difference between filtered coffee and the conventional, sediment-heavy alternatives. This direct engagement helped her overcome the skepticism of a market accustomed to outdated brewing habits, and by the end of the first year, her company had produced 1,200 units, setting the stage for rapid expansion.

In the 1930s, the company further refined the technology by introducing the iconic cone-shaped filter with internal ribs. This design was a critical advancement in coffee science, as it increased the surface area for filtration and improved the flow of water through the coffee bed. By optimizing the extraction process, the cone shape ensured more consistent results, a principle that remains the standard for modern pour-over brewing today. This evolution solidified the brand's role as a pioneer in coffee technology, leading to subsequent innovations like the first vacuum-packed ground coffee.
