Pache Colis is a hybrid coffee variety resulting from a cross between the Pache Comum and Caturra cultivars. Developed in Guatemala, it is valued for its compact growth habit, which allows for higher planting density, and its ability to produce distinctly large coffee cherries.
Pache Colis is a significant coffee cultivar within the Arabica family, representing a deliberate hybridization of two established dwarf varieties: Pache Comum and Caturra. To understand Pache Colis, one must first understand its parentage. Pache Comum is a natural dwarf mutation of the classic Typica variety, discovered in 1949 on the Brito farm in Santa Cruz Naranjo, Guatemala. By crossing this Typica-derived mutation with Caturra—a well-known dwarf mutation of Bourbon—breeders created Pache Colis, a plant specifically engineered for the high-density, high-yield requirements of modern coffee farming.
The primary motivation for the development of Pache Colis was the pursuit of efficiency. Like its parents, Pache Colis is a compact, short-statured plant, typically reaching heights between 0.8 and 1.25 meters. This dwarfism is a critical trait for farmers, as it allows for closer spacing between trees, effectively increasing the number of plants per hectare. In practice, this means that a farmer can maximize the productivity of a limited land area, a vital consideration in regions where arable land is at a premium or where labor costs for harvesting are high.
Beyond its stature, Pache Colis is physically distinct due to its foliage and fruit. The variety is characterized by roughly textured leaves and produces notably large coffee cherries. These morphological traits make it relatively easy to identify in the field compared to other common varieties. Furthermore, the variety has demonstrated some level of resistance to Phoma, a fungal disease that can cause significant damage to coffee crops, providing a modest but important layer of protection for producers in specific microclimates.
For the roaster and the consumer, Pache Colis offers a specific sensory profile that is often described as smooth and approachable. While it shares the genetic lineage of Typica and Bourbon, the trade-off for its high productivity and compact size is often a cup profile that is perceived as flatter or less complex than its taller, lower-yielding ancestors. However, when grown at optimal altitudes—typically between 3,000 and 6,000 feet—the quality of the cup improves significantly, making it a reliable component in many Central American coffee offerings.
Geographically, the story of Pache Colis is deeply rooted in the landscape of Guatemala, specifically in regions like Mataquescuintla. The variety has become a part of the local agricultural fabric, often grown alongside other varieties like Caturra. Its history is also intertwined with the broader socio-political context of Guatemalan coffee, where indigenous communities have utilized coffee production as a means of economic resistance and cultural preservation against external pressures, such as industrial mining projects.
Today, Pache Colis stands as a testament to the mid-20th-century push for agricultural modernization in Central America. While it may not carry the same prestige as heirloom varieties or the high-disease resistance of modern F1 hybrids, it remains a functional, productive, and historically relevant variety. For the specialty coffee industry, it serves as a reminder of the constant balance farmers must strike between yield, plant health, and the nuanced flavor profiles demanded by the global market.
