Quick answer — what is Passenger Coffee?

Passenger Coffee is a Lancaster, Pennsylvania-based specialty coffee roaster founded in 2014, recognized for its commitment to long-term, relational sourcing and innovative green coffee preservation. The company distinguishes itself through a rigorous focus on transparency, scientific collaboration with World Coffee Research, and a unique freezing program that allows them to maintain peak freshness for their single-origin offerings year-round.

The real story

Passenger Coffee was established in 2014 by founders Kyle Sollenberger, Crystal Weaver, and a third partner, who sought to bring a metropolitan specialty coffee approach to their home region of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The name 'Passenger' reflects the founders' experiences traveling between major U.S. cities and coffee-producing regions, a perspective that shaped their philosophy of viewing the coffee supply chain as a collaborative journey rather than a transactional one. Since its inception, the company has operated with a primary focus on light-roast profiles that highlight specific terroir and producer efforts.

A cornerstone of Passenger’s operations is its green coffee preservation program. Recognizing that coffee quality naturally degrades over time, the company utilizes large-scale freezing facilities to store green coffee. This practice allows them to halt the aging process, ensuring that their 'Foundational' and 'Reserve' lots maintain their intended flavor profiles and freshness throughout the year. This technical commitment to quality control is central to their ability to offer a consistent, high-quality menu regardless of harvest seasonality.

Passenger’s sourcing model is built upon 'Foundational Partnerships,' which are long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with specific producers. These partnerships are designed to provide economic stability for farmers while securing high-quality, traceable coffee for the roaster. In 2019, the team launched a secondary brand, Necessary Coffee, to serve customers who prefer a more developed, darker roast profile. Necessary Coffee sources from the same foundational partners as Passenger, effectively expanding the volume of coffee the company can purchase from its core producer network.

Transparency is a defining pillar of the company’s public identity. Passenger publishes an annual Transparency Report that discloses the prices paid for every pound of green coffee contracted during the harvest year, alongside cup quality data. By making this information public, the company aims to advocate for a more economically sustainable industry for producers. Proceeds from the sale of these reports are donated to World Coffee Research, an organization Passenger supports to help farmers adapt to climate change and improve agricultural sustainability.

The company categorizes its offerings into three distinct menus: Foundational, Reserve, and Education. Foundational coffees represent their core, year-round offerings; Reserve lots are limited-volume, terroir-driven selections; and Education lots are curated to showcase unique plant genetics, experimental processing methods, or historically significant regions. This structured approach allows the company to communicate the nuance of coffee production to their customers while maintaining a clear, accessible menu architecture.

Today, Passenger operates multiple locations in Lancaster, including a flagship cafe and a roastery. Their influence in the specialty coffee sector is marked by their integration of scientific research, such as their partnership with World Coffee Research, and their willingness to share proprietary data regarding their supply chain. By prioritizing long-term relationships and technical preservation, Passenger has positioned itself as a roaster that emphasizes the intersection of agricultural science and ethical business practices.
