Cerrado Mineiro

Cerrado Mineiro is a high-plain savanna region located in the northwest of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Spanning over 210,000 hectares across 55 municipalities, it represents a departure from the traditional image of steep-slope, hand-picked coffee farming. Instead, the region is defined by its flat, expansive terrain, which allows for large-scale mechanized harvesting and highly controlled agricultural practices. This technological approach has made it a powerhouse for consistent, high-quality production.

In 2013, Cerrado Mineiro became Brazil’s first coffee region to earn a protected Denomination of Origin (DO) status. This legal framework functions similarly to wine appellations, establishing strict boundaries and quality standards for any coffee bearing the name. This move was a significant shift for the Brazilian industry, which historically prioritized volume and screen size over regional identity. Today, traceability is a hallmark of the region, with many lots offering detailed information down to the individual farm.

The region’s climate is the primary driver of its unique profile. It experiences a distinct, well-defined dry season during the harvest months, which allows producers to dry their natural and pulped natural coffees slowly and evenly. This climate, combined with altitudes ranging from 800 to 1,300 meters, results in a cup profile that is remarkably reliable. Consumers can expect notes of milk chocolate, hazelnut, and caramel, supported by a heavy body and low, approachable acidity.

Because of this consistency and sweetness, Cerrado Mineiro is widely considered the gold standard for the base of espresso blends. It provides the necessary body and crema without introducing sharp or volatile acidity, making it a favorite among roasters who prioritize balance and approachability. For the drinker, it offers a comforting, classic cup that highlights the potential of modern, technified coffee farming.
