Buliza washing station
The story
Buliza is a coffee washing station located in the Rulindo district of Rwanda's Northern Province. It operates as part of the CAFERWA/Olam Rwanda Ltd network, which has been active in the region since the early 2000s to support the rebuilding of the Rwandan coffee sector.
Challenges
The station must manage the logistics of receiving cherries from over 2,000 smallholder farmers and ensuring strict quality control through hand-sorting to maintain specialty standards.
Innovations
Buliza implements sustainability initiatives by donating fertilizer produced from leftover coffee pulp back to its supplying farmers and plans to initiate training programs in agricultural best practices.
