Daterra Farms and Hacienda Miramonte, Costa Rica
The story
Conceived in the 1980s after initial ventures in cattle and avocado farming, Daterra was established with a mission to reinvent coffee production through sustainable agriculture. The founders focused on restoring the degraded ecosystem of their land, eventually becoming the first coffee farm in Brazil to earn Rainforest Alliance certification.
Challenges
The farm initially faced significant agronomical and environmental degradation, requiring extensive efforts to restore the local ecosystem, water springs, and soil health.
Innovations
Daterra utilizes the proprietary Penta Process for quality control and traceability, and has developed the Penta bag to protect beans from light and airflow. They also operate as a carbon-negative farm and maintain a dedicated laboratory for testing experimental drying techniques and rare hybrid varieties.
