Gamatui Community

The story

The Gamatui community is a group of smallholder farmers located on the slopes of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda. The community consists of many family-run farms that have historically collaborated to process their coffee at a centralized facility. They have maintained long-standing partnerships with international coffee roasters and exporters for over half a decade.

Challenges

Smallholder farmers in the region face difficulties regarding physical and economic accessibility, as well as the broader socio-economic hurdles common to the Ugandan coffee sector.

Innovations

The community utilizes the Sipi Falls Washing Station for centralized processing, which streamlines labor for farmers and ensures traceability. Natural processed lots are dried on raised beds for three weeks to enhance cup complexity.
