Muhathi Estate

The story

Muhathi Estate is owned and managed by Peris Wambui Karungondo, who returned to Kenya after working as a nurse in the UK for 22 years to care for her mother. The estate is located in the Ngewa-Komothai area of Kiambu County. It is a family-run operation where Peris manages the farm with assistance from her son, Sam Wicho Gambui.

Challenges

The farm faces the inherent difficulties of coffee cultivation in the Kiambu region, which is increasingly pressured by its proximity to Nairobi's urban expansion.

Innovations

Peris Wambui Karungondo invested in on-site processing equipment to pulp, wash, and dry coffee cherries, which allows for greater control over quality and improved traceability compared to selling to centralized washing stations.
