Ninga Washing Station

The story

Ninga Washing Station was established in 2019 by the Long Miles Coffee Project, founded by Ben and Kristy Carlson. The station was built to serve farmers in the remote Kayanza region who previously had to travel long distances to access fair-trade washing facilities. It is the third washing station constructed by the organization to support local coffee-growing communities.

Challenges

The region is extremely remote with limited access to electricity and clean drinking water for local communities. Farmers face significant logistical hurdles, including the lack of nearby infrastructure and the difficulty of transporting cherries to processing sites.

Innovations

The station features its own borehole water source to address local water scarcity. It utilizes rigorous quality control measures, including hand-sorting, floating, and double-fermentation processes to enhance cup quality.
