Group of small producers
Smallholder coffee producers in Colombia represent the vast majority of the country's coffee sector, with over 540,000 registered producers. These farmers typically operate on small plots of land, often only a few hectares in size, and are essential to the production of high-quality Colombian coffee. Many work through regional cooperatives or federations to market their beans and improve their livelihoods.
History
Smallholder coffee farming in Colombia has a long-standing history supported by the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros (FNC), which was founded in 1927 to design sectoral policies. In regions like Nariño, small farmers have historically faced challenges related to conflict and illicit crop routes, leading to the formation of organizations like Federación Abades to help preserve coffee livelihoods. Producers often receive training through local cooperatives to transition into specialty coffee production.
