The Kiangoi factory is a vital wet mill located on the slopes of Mount Kenya in Kirinyaga County, a region globally renowned for producing coffees with exceptional complexity and acidity. It operates as one of three primary processing facilities under the umbrella of the Rungeto Farmers' Cooperative Society (FCS), alongside the Kii and Karimikui factories. The cooperative itself was established in 1997 following the liquidation of the Ngariama Cooperative Society, with members uniting to preserve and elevate the quality of coffee production in the area.

In the Kenyan coffee system, a 'factory' acts as a central processing hub where smallholder farmers deliver their hand-picked cherries. The Kiangoi factory serves a dedicated membership of approximately 950 smallholders. These farmers typically manage small plots of land, often intercropping coffee with subsistence crops like bananas, avocados, and macadamias to ensure food security and income diversification. The cooperative structure provides these farmers with essential infrastructure, including access to processing equipment and technical support from agronomists.

Processing at Kiangoi follows the traditional, rigorous Kenyan washed method. After delivery, cherries are sorted and pulped to remove the skin. The beans undergo fermentation to break down the mucilage, followed by thorough washing with fresh water—often sourced from local rivers—and sun-drying on raised beds. This meticulous process is designed to highlight the inherent characteristics of the varieties grown in the region, which primarily include the celebrated SL28 and SL34 cultivars, alongside newer, disease-resistant varieties like Ruiru 11 and Batian.

The Rungeto FCS is notable for its commitment to the long-term economic stability of its members. Beyond coffee processing, the society has diversified its operations to include a dairy cooling plant, which collects over 120,000 liters of milk monthly, providing a steady secondary income stream for its members. Furthermore, the society has utilized Fairtrade premiums to invest in community infrastructure, such as a fuel station, which helps cover operational overheads and increases the net payout to the farmers.

Governance of the cooperative is democratic, managed by an elected board of seven members with representation from each of the three factories, including a rotating women’s representative. This structure ensures that the needs of the smallholders are prioritized. Because the Kenyan coffee industry utilizes an auction system, the high quality produced at the Kiangoi factory is directly rewarded with higher prices, creating a competitive incentive for farmers to maintain rigorous harvesting and processing standards.

For the roaster and the consumer, the Kiangoi tag represents a specific origin profile characterized by bright, sparkling acidity and deep, juicy fruit notes. The consistency of the output is a testament to the collective effort of the 950 members who deliver to the factory. By participating in the Rungeto FCS, these farmers gain access to international markets that value the unique terroir of Kirinyaga, ensuring that their labor is recognized and compensated within the specialty coffee value chain.
