Cup of Excellence

The Cup of Excellence (COE) program originated in 1999 as a revolutionary initiative to address the systemic issue of low commodity prices for high-quality coffee producers. Born out of a Gourmet Coffee Project managed by the International Coffee Organization and funded by the Common Fund for Commodities, the program sought to create a new economic model. By establishing a competition that identified the best coffees from a specific origin and selling them through an online auction, the founders—including Marcelo Vieira, Silvio Leite, Susie Spindler, Hidetaka Hayashi, George Howell, and Don Holly—pioneered a system that directly connected farmers to international buyers willing to pay premiums for quality.

At its core, the COE is defined by its rigorous, multi-stage evaluation process. Thousands of coffee samples are submitted annually, each undergoing a series of blind-cupping sessions. The process begins with a National Jury of local experts, followed by an International Jury of experienced global cuppers. To ensure absolute integrity, every sample is assigned a code known only to an independent auditor, ensuring that jurors evaluate the coffee based solely on its sensory profile without bias toward the farm or producer. This level of scrutiny is widely considered the gold standard in the specialty coffee industry.

Traceability is a fundamental pillar of the COE model. Every winning lot is meticulously documented from the farm to the auction block, allowing roasters and consumers to know the exact origin and micro-lot of their coffee. This transparency not only builds trust but also provides farmers with the recognition and financial incentive to invest in improved agricultural, harvesting, and processing practices. Over the past 25 years, this has significantly elevated the global standard for specialty coffee production.

In 2002, the Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE) was established as a non-profit organization to manage the growing program. ACE facilitates the online auctions where members bid on the winning coffees. The financial impact is substantial; the vast majority of auction proceeds go directly to the farmers, often resulting in record-breaking prices that far exceed standard market rates. This economic reward has turned many small-scale producers into recognized figures in the global coffee community.

Beyond the top-tier winners, the program expanded in 2016 to include the 'National Winner' category. This tier recognizes high-scoring semi-finalist coffees that do not reach the final auction but still demonstrate exceptional quality. This expansion allows a broader range of farmers to benefit from the program's marketing and sales platform, further incentivizing quality improvements across entire regions rather than just for a few elite producers.

The current state of the COE reflects its evolution into a global institution. Despite challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitated the adoption of modified safety protocols and remote judging, the program has continued to operate in over a dozen countries. It remains a vital mechanism for discovering unique, handcrafted coffees and continues to set the benchmark for integrity and direct trade in the specialty coffee sector.
