The Gathaithi Farmers’ Cooperative Society is a prominent coffee producer organization based in Nyeri County, Kenya, operating a central washing station that processes cherries from over 1,600 smallholder members. It is highly regarded in the specialty coffee industry for producing high-quality, washed Kenyan coffees characterized by vibrant acidity, complex fruit notes, and deep sweetness, which are cultivated in the region's renowned volcanic soils.
The Gathaithi Farmers’ Cooperative Society is located in the Tetu sub-county of Nyeri, Kenya, a region widely recognized as the heartland of Kenyan specialty coffee. Situated on the slopes of Mount Kenya, the cooperative benefits from the area's high altitude, which typically reaches 1,700 meters above sea level, and its nutrient-dense red volcanic soil. These environmental factors, combined with consistent rainfall, create the ideal conditions for the slow maturation of coffee cherries, resulting in the complex, flavor-dense profiles for which Nyeri coffees are celebrated.
While the Gathaithi Coffee Factory was formally registered in its current capacity in 2000, its operational roots extend back to 1967. The factory functions as a central hub for more than 1,656 smallholder members. Each member typically manages a small plot of land, averaging about half an acre, with approximately 120 coffee trees. This structure is emblematic of the Kenyan cooperative system, where individual farmers focus on meticulous cultivation and hand-picking, while the cooperative provides the infrastructure necessary for large-scale processing and quality control.
The cooperative primarily focuses on the cultivation of traditional Kenyan varieties, specifically SL28 and SL34, which account for approximately 95% of their production. These varieties are prized for their high cup quality and distinct flavor profiles. In recent years, the cooperative has also incorporated smaller amounts of the disease-resistant varieties Ruiru 11 and Batian, ensuring both agricultural resilience and the maintenance of the high-quality standards expected by international roasters.
Processing at Gathaithi follows the traditional, rigorous Kenyan washed method. Once hand-picked, cherries are delivered to the factory on the same day to ensure freshness. The coffee undergoes depulping, overnight fermentation, and a thorough washing process. Following this, the parchment coffee is soaked and then dried on raised beds for a period of 7 to 15 days, depending on the prevailing weather conditions. During this time, staff members perform continuous sorting and turning of the parchment to ensure uniform moisture content and prevent defects.
This commitment to processing excellence allows the Gathaithi Farmers’ Cooperative Society to produce approximately 60 tonnes of clean coffee annually, with the capacity for further growth. The resulting cup profile is consistently noted for its sweetness and vibrant, fruit-forward characteristics, often featuring tasting notes such as cranberry, red currant, toffee, and yuzu. These attributes have made Gathaithi a sought-after name among specialty roasters who value the transparency and traceability provided by the cooperative model.
For the farmer, the cooperative provides essential access to the global market, allowing smallholders to pool their resources and achieve the scale necessary for auction or direct trade. For the roaster and the drinker, the Gathaithi tag represents a reliable standard of quality that reflects the unique terroir of Nyeri. By maintaining strict oversight of the wet milling process, the cooperative ensures that the hard work of the individual smallholder is preserved from the farm gate to the final cup.
