Greenco

Greenco is a pivotal entity in the Burundian coffee sector, specifically operating within the Kayanza province. Established in 2015, the organization functions as a structural support system for numerous washing stations, acting as a bridge between thousands of smallholder farmers and the international specialty coffee market. Their primary mission is to professionalize the production chain by providing the necessary infrastructure and technical oversight required to produce high-quality, traceable coffee in a region where individual farm yields are typically quite small.

The operational model of Greenco is built upon the organization of smallholder farmers into manageable groups. Producers delivering cherry to Greenco-managed stations are organized into groups of approximately 30 people, each led by a designated farm leader. This structure serves as a vital communication channel, allowing for the efficient dissemination of agricultural best practices and the coordination of logistics between the farmers and the washing stations.

To ensure the long-term viability of coffee production in the region, Greenco actively invests in the renewal of coffee plantings. They source seeds from the Institut des Sciences Agronomiques du Burundi (ISABU) to establish nurseries, providing these seedlings to farmers at or below cost. Furthermore, they promote sustainable agricultural practices by offering organic fertilizer produced from composted coffee pulp at their washing stations, helping farmers improve soil health and crop yields without excessive reliance on external inputs.

Quality control is a cornerstone of the Greenco operation. Their team of expert cuppers evaluates every lot of coffee, maintaining strict separation based on the specific washing station, the day of harvest, and the quality grade. This meticulous approach to traceability ensures that the final product can be traced back to its origin, providing roasters and consumers with transparency regarding the coffee's provenance and processing methods.

Processing at Greenco-affiliated stations, such as Kibingo and Masha, typically focuses on the Red Bourbon variety. Whether the coffee undergoes a fully washed process or a natural process, the stations employ rigorous sorting and drying protocols. Parchment is dried on raised beds, where it is repeatedly sifted and sorted to ensure uniform moisture content and to remove any defective beans, with protection provided during rain or overnight hours.

For the farmer, the Greenco model offers a pathway to higher-value markets through improved quality and consistent processing. For the roaster, it provides a reliable supply chain where the identity of the coffee is preserved through every stage of the journey. By standardizing these processes, Greenco has become a significant contributor to the reputation of Kayanza coffee, demonstrating how structured support and traceability can elevate the output of smallholder agricultural systems.
