Hamasho is a prominent coffee-producing village and washing station located in the Bensa district of the Sidama region in Ethiopia. It is highly regarded in specialty coffee for its high-altitude cultivation and the production of exceptional, flavor-forward lots, often processed by the renowned Daye Bensa company under the leadership of Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo.
Hamasho is a village and critical coffee processing hub situated in the Bensa district of Ethiopia’s Sidama region. The area is defined by its high elevation, with coffee farms and washing stations typically operating between 1,920 and 2,300 meters above sea level. This extreme altitude, combined with the region's volcanic soil, creates an ideal environment for the slow maturation of coffee cherries, which is essential for developing the complex, floral, and fruit-forward profiles for which Hamasho coffee is celebrated.
The coffee production in Hamasho is largely facilitated by Daye Bensa, an export company founded by brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo. The brothers, who grew up in the region, established the company with the goal of improving infrastructure and market access for local smallholder farmers. Their work has been instrumental in elevating the quality of coffee from the Bensa district, culminating in significant recognition, including Daye Bensa’s second-place finish in the 2022 Ethiopia Cup of Excellence.
At the Hamasho washing station, the operation works with hundreds of local smallholder farmers who contribute their harvests. The station is known for its versatility in processing, handling traditional washed and natural methods alongside modern, experimental techniques such as anaerobic and cold-fermentation processes. These methods are often applied to the JARC variety 74158, a specific selection favored for its high quality and distinct aromatic characteristics.
For the roaster and the consumer, Hamasho represents the pinnacle of modern Ethiopian specialty coffee. The cup profiles are frequently described as having intense floral aromatics, such as jasmine and lilac, paired with vibrant fruit notes like peach, mango, lychee, and blueberry. The precision in processing—whether it is a 72-hour anaerobic wash or a meticulously dried natural lot—highlights the potential of the 74158 variety when managed by skilled producers.
It is important to distinguish Hamasho from other similarly named entities in Ethiopia, such as the Hamacho Waeno cooperative, which is a separate, large-scale cooperative organization in southern Ethiopia. While both share the rich coffee heritage of the Sidama region, Hamasho in Bensa is specifically associated with the modern, high-end microlot movement driven by the Dukamo family’s infrastructure and their focus on experimental processing.
The impact of the Hamasho station extends beyond the cup, as it serves as a vital economic engine for the local community. By providing the necessary wet and dry milling infrastructure in a remote, high-altitude area, Daye Bensa has enabled smallholder farmers to access international specialty markets that were previously unreachable. This model of vertical integration and community partnership has made Hamasho a benchmark for traceability and quality in the Ethiopian coffee sector.
