Quick answer — what is Inácio Urban & Family?

Inácio Urban & Family are the founders and operators of Fazenda Rio Brilhante, a prominent coffee estate in the Cerrado Mineiro region of Brazil. The family is recognized for transforming a small experimental plot into a large-scale, modern operation that emphasizes rigorous quality control, innovative processing protocols, and a commitment to specialty coffee production.

The real story

Inácio Urban, a producer of German descent originally from Brazil’s southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul, founded Fazenda Rio Brilhante in the 1980s. Seeking new agricultural opportunities, Urban relocated to the Cerrado Mineiro region, an area then considered undesirable and inexpensive for coffee cultivation. He began with a modest 20-hectare plot, famously stating his intention was simply to learn the nuances of growing coffee. Over the subsequent four decades, Urban expanded his holdings significantly, proving the viability of the region and establishing the farm as a major producer in the Brazilian coffee landscape.

Today, Fazenda Rio Brilhante is a massive, multi-faceted operation located in the Pântano micro-region of Minas Gerais. The farm spans thousands of hectares, with a significant portion dedicated to coffee production, while the remainder is balanced between native forest reserves and other crops like cotton, corn, and beans. The landscape is characterized by flat, smooth terrain and well-defined seasons, which provide the consistent, dry harvest conditions necessary for the high-quality natural and pulped natural coffees for which the farm is known.

In 2006, the second generation of the Urban family joined the business, marking a shift toward continued innovation and professionalization. Inácio’s children, Erika and Fernando Urban, along with his son-in-law Noé, now play integral roles in the daily management and strategic direction of the farm. This transition has ensured the continuity of the family's vision while integrating modern management practices to maintain the farm's competitive edge in the specialty market.

A defining aspect of the farm's recent history is its collaborative approach to production. The Urban family formed a partnership with Josue Morales of Los Volcanes Coffee, a renowned producer from Guatemala. This cross-continental collaboration focused on the application of microbiology as an agricultural solution to production and quality challenges. By adapting protocols from Morales’s Finca La Esperanza in Guatemala, the team at Rio Brilhante has implemented sophisticated processing techniques that have elevated the consistency and profile of their output.

The farm’s technical approach is highly structured, with the coffee-growing area divided into dozens of distinct sections. These sections are managed based on specific micro-climates and terroir characteristics. To protect the coffee from the frequent winds characteristic of the flat Pântano landscape, the family utilizes windbreaks consisting of grevillea and mahogany trees, which also serve to separate different sections of the farm.

Fazenda Rio Brilhante produces a variety of cultivars, including Bourbon, Catuai, Catucai, and Topázio. The farm’s commitment to quality is reflected in its rigorous control methods, which have allowed it to maintain a strong reputation among international roasters. By combining traditional agricultural experience with a willingness to adopt experimental, science-based processing methods, the Inácio Urban family has successfully positioned their estate as a leader in modern, large-scale specialty coffee production in Brazil.
