Katia Duke

Katia Duke is a dedicated coffee producer based in the Copán Department of Honduras, where she operates Finca San Isidro. Located just fifteen minutes from the town of Ruinas de Copán, the farm has been in her family for generations. Initially, the farm followed traditional production methods, selling parchment coffee to local intermediaries. Duke’s path changed significantly after she studied agronomy at the prestigious Zamorano Pan-American Agricultural School, providing her with the technical foundation to modernize her family's legacy.

The turning point for the farm occurred in 2012 when the la roya (leaf rust) epidemic devastated coffee crops across Honduras. This crisis forced Duke to fundamentally reassess her approach to coffee production. Seeking to move beyond traditional commodity farming, she pursued further education in the specialty coffee industry, including training to become a certified barista. This shift allowed her to transition San Isidro toward high-quality, specialty-grade production, focusing on direct relationships with roasters and improved processing techniques.

Duke’s journey as a producer was marked by significant social challenges, particularly regarding gender roles in the local agricultural sector. When she first took over management of the farm, she faced resistance from laborers who were unwilling to work for a woman; on her first day, only two other women arrived to assist her. Through persistence and a commitment to professionalizing her operations, she eventually built a strong, respected team at San Isidro founded on the principle of mutual respect.

Today, Finca San Isidro is known for its experimentation with diverse coffee varieties and processing methods. The farm produces several varieties, including Catuai, Catimor, and Obatá, at an elevation of approximately 1,300 meters. Duke has gained recognition for her technical versatility, offering a range of profiles that include traditional full-washed lots, natural processes, and more complex methods such as anaerobic red honey and microorganism-fermented washed coffees. These lots are frequently sought after by specialty roasters for their distinct flavor profiles, which often feature notes of chocolate, toffee, red currant, and citrus.

Beyond her technical achievements, Duke has established herself as a leader within her local community. Her success has enabled her to spearhead social initiatives, including the construction of a local school and the implementation of nutritional programs for the area. This holistic approach to farming—balancing agronomic excellence with community development—has made her a notable figure in the Honduran specialty coffee landscape.

For the roaster and the consumer, the 'Katia Duke' tag represents a commitment to traceability and quality. Her coffees are frequently featured by specialty importers, reflecting a shift from anonymous bulk production to a model where the producer’s identity and specific processing choices are central to the product's value. Her story stands as a testament to the impact of technical education and resilience in the face of climate-related agricultural crises.
