Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society is a prominent Kenyan producer organization in Kirinyaga County that manages three high-performing coffee factories: Kii, Karimikui, and Kiangoi. It is highly regarded in the specialty coffee industry for its meticulous processing standards, consistent quality, and commitment to supporting thousands of smallholder farmers through technical agronomy and financial services.
The Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS) represents a significant pillar of coffee production in Kenya’s Kirinyaga County. Established on March 4, 1997, the cooperative emerged following the dissolution of the Ngariama Cooperative Society. A group of 1,150 founding members sought to reclaim control over their production and marketing, eventually reopening three historic processing facilities: Kii, Karimikui, and Kiangoi. Today, the society has grown into a robust organization representing thousands of smallholder farmers, with membership figures often cited between 5,000 and 8,000 active participants.
Geographically, the cooperative is situated on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, an area renowned for its high altitude, rich volcanic soil, and favorable climate. Member farms typically sit between 1,300 and 1,900 meters above sea level. These smallholders, who often manage less than one hectare of land, intercrop their coffee with subsistence crops like avocados, macadamias, and bananas, ensuring both food security and economic diversity. The cooperative is governed by an elected board, which includes representatives from each factory and a rotating women’s representative to ensure equitable decision-making.
Rungeto is perhaps best known for the exceptional quality of its washed coffees, processed at its three primary factories. The Kii factory, in particular, has gained international acclaim for its rigorous sorting and processing protocols. The standard procedure involves an initial bulk fermentation period of 16 to 18 hours, which is carefully monitored by staff every three hours to account for ambient temperature fluctuations. Following fermentation, the parchment is washed in fresh water using concrete channels, where agitation is used to separate beans by density, ensuring only the highest quality parchment proceeds to the drying stage.
After washing, the coffee is moved to raised drying beds for a slow, controlled drying process that can last anywhere from 5 to 30 days, depending on the climate. Once the moisture content is stabilized, the parchment is stored in ventilated boxes on-site. This attention to detail is supported by the cooperative’s own team of agronomists, who conduct regular farm visits to provide technical training on agricultural practices, helping farmers improve yields and maintain the high standards required for the specialty market.
Beyond technical production, the cooperative serves as a vital social and economic safety net for its members. Rungeto provides pre-financing for school fees, farm inputs, and emergency assistance, which helps stabilize the livelihoods of its members against the volatility of the coffee market. The cooperative’s commitment to transparency and fair payment has made it a preferred partner for specialty roasters and importers globally, who value the consistency and traceability of the lots produced under the Rungeto name.
In the current landscape of Kenyan coffee, Rungeto stands as a model of a farmer-owned institution that successfully balances large-scale production with high-quality output. By maintaining strict control over the processing chain and investing in the long-term success of its members, the society continues to produce coffees characterized by complex acidity and distinct flavor profiles, such as notes of cranberry, mandarin, and dark plum. Its history from the ashes of the Ngariama Cooperative to its current status as a leader in Kirinyaga reflects the resilience and dedication of the local farming community.
