Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society

Founded in 1956 with an initial membership of 250 farmers, the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society (OFCS) has grown into one of Kenya’s most respected and largest fully farmer-owned coffee cooperatives. Located in the Nyeri South sub-county, the society operates within the fertile highlands between the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya. This strategic geography provides an ideal microclimate for Arabica cultivation, with elevations ranging from 1,750 to nearly 2,000 meters above sea level, which contributes to the high acidity and complex flavor profiles characteristic of their coffee.

The cooperative functions through a network of 19 individual wet mills, locally referred to as 'factories.' These factories serve as the primary collection and processing points for over 16,000 smallholder members, many of whom manage small plots of land with only an acre or two of coffee production. By centralizing processing, the society ensures that small-scale farmers have access to professional infrastructure, including nurseries for seedlings and standardized wet-milling equipment, which is essential for maintaining the quality required for the specialty market.

Processing at OFCS factories typically follows the traditional Kenyan washed method. Farmers deliver hand-sorted, ripe cherries to the factory, where they are de-pulped, fermented in cement vats—often utilizing double fermentation techniques—washed, and dried to a specific moisture content of 10-11%. This rigorous attention to detail during the primary processing stage is a hallmark of the society’s operations and is a primary reason for their consistent performance in national and international markets.

Beyond production, the society is noted for its organizational structure and commitment to transparency. It has maintained a reputation as one of the best-managed cooperatives in Kenya, often working with marketing agents to ensure higher returns for its members. The society is also Fairtrade certified, a designation it has held since 2012, which underscores its commitment to sustainable practices and community-focused development. This structure provides a vital economic backbone for the Othaya region, creating opportunities for youth and women within the coffee value chain.

The coffee produced by OFCS, often featuring classic Kenyan varieties like SL28 and SL34, is highly sought after by roasters globally for its balanced, vibrant cup profile, which frequently includes notes of black tea, peach, and floral aromatics. Individual factories within the society, such as the Mahiga factory, have gained their own reputations for excellence, with their lots frequently cited in specialty coffee circles for their distinct dimensionality and quality.
