Pepe Jijón

José “Pepe” Jijón is a prominent figure in the specialty coffee industry, recognized for his transformative approach to farming in the Ecuadorian Andes. Born in 1974, Jijón’s background is as diverse as it is impressive; he is a trained psychologist and a former world-class mountaineer who became the first Latin American to summit the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. This background in extreme environments and his deep connection to nature inform his current work as a coffee producer, where he emphasizes environmental stewardship and meticulous quality control.

In 2010, following a life-changing motorcycle accident, Jijón purchased a 120-hectare property in the Intag Valley of the Imbabura province. He named the farm Finca Soledad—Spanish for 'solitude'—as a reflection of his initial desire to retreat from the world and reconnect with the land. The region, which had previously suffered from the ecological degradation of mining operations and deforestation, became the canvas for his vision of sustainable, biodynamic coffee production. Today, only a small fraction of the land is dedicated to coffee cultivation, allowing the surrounding cloud forest to thrive.

Jijón’s rise to international prominence in the coffee sector accelerated around 2021, particularly following his presence at the World of Coffee event in Milan. His reputation is built on his ability to produce exceptional, high-scoring lots that showcase the unique terroir of the Ecuadorian Andes. He works closely with his family, including his father and his son, José, to manage the farm’s operations, which prioritize both ecological health and the production of rare, high-quality coffee varieties.

Finca Soledad is particularly noted for its cultivation of varieties such as Sidra and Typica Mejorado. These coffees are often processed using experimental methods that highlight the inherent complexity of the beans. The farm’s high altitude and the specific microclimate of the Intag Valley contribute to a slow maturation process, which is essential for developing the vibrant acidity, floral aromatics, and tea-like body that have become hallmarks of Jijón’s output. The coffee is frequently dried on raised beds under controlled conditions to preserve its structural integrity.

Beyond his work at Finca Soledad, Jijón has expanded his influence through collaborative projects, such as Fincas del Putushio in the southern region of Loja. This project, run alongside his father and Francisco Vintimilla, focuses on growing high-altitude Typica Mejorado at elevations reaching 2,222 meters above sea level. These initiatives demonstrate his commitment to exploring the potential of different Ecuadorian regions and his dedication to advancing the standards of specialty coffee production.

For the specialty coffee industry, Jijón represents a shift toward producer-led innovation. His work is frequently sought after by top-tier roasters globally, who value not only the sensory profile of his coffees—often characterized by notes of stone fruit, florals, and refined sweetness—but also the transparency and ethical rigor of his farming practices.
