Finca Soledad is a renowned specialty coffee farm in Ecuador’s Intag Valley, founded by José Ignacio “Pepe” Jijón. It is celebrated for its commitment to biodiversity, regenerative agriculture, and the production of high-quality, experimental lots of varieties like Sidra, Gesha, and Mejorado.
Finca Soledad is located in the Intag Valley of the Imbabura province in northern Ecuador. Established in 2010 by José Ignacio “Pepe” Jijón and his father, the farm spans 120 hectares of high-altitude cloud forest. The name 'Soledad,' meaning solitude, reflects the founder's initial intent to retreat from the world following a life-altering motorcycle accident that left him with paralysis in his right wrist. Despite having no prior background in agriculture or coffee consumption, Jijón transformed the land into a model of specialty coffee production through a decade of intensive learning and experimentation.
Before his career in coffee, Jijón was a professional mountaineer and the first Latin American to climb the Seven Summits—the highest peaks on each continent. This background in exploration and environmental stewardship heavily influences the farm's philosophy. Of the 120 hectares owned by the estate, only about four hectares are dedicated to coffee cultivation. The remaining land is preserved as a biodiverse cloud forest, reflecting a deep commitment to environmental sustainability and the restoration of land previously degraded by mining and deforestation.
Finca Soledad is highly regarded for its precision-focused approach to processing and variety selection. The farm exclusively cultivates three varieties: Sidra, Gesha, and Mejorado. These are processed using innovative, controlled techniques, such as the 'Wave' honey and washed methods, which are designed to highlight the unique characteristics of the terroir. The farm’s high elevation of approximately 1,550 meters above sea level, combined with the cool, misty climate of the Intag Valley, allows for slow cherry maturation, which contributes to the complexity and clarity found in the final cup.
Jijón’s transition from a mountaineer to a coffee producer has been marked by a rapid rise in international recognition. Since gaining prominence in the specialty coffee scene around 2021, Finca Soledad has become a sought-after name among roasters and green coffee buyers globally. The farm’s reputation is built on the meticulous nature of its production, where small, special reserve lots are treated with extreme care, emphasizing quality and flavor profile over high-volume output.
In practice, the farm operates as a testament to the potential of regenerative farming. By maintaining a vast majority of the property as protected forest, the farm creates a natural buffer that supports local ecosystems while providing shade for the coffee trees. This balance between human intervention and natural preservation is central to the farm's identity. The coffee is typically hand-picked at peak ripeness and subjected to rigorous sorting before undergoing fermentation and drying on raised beds, ensuring that the delicate floral and fruit-forward notes characteristic of their varieties are preserved.
For the roaster and the drinker, Finca Soledad represents the intersection of technical precision and environmental ethics. The coffees are frequently noted for their vibrant acidity, tea-like body, and complex flavor profiles, such as hibiscus, orange, and stone fruits. By prioritizing small-scale, high-quality lots, the farm provides a clear example of how direct trade and sustainable land management can elevate the value of coffee, rewarding both the producer’s dedication and the consumer’s appreciation for nuanced, terroir-driven specialty coffee.
