Dumerso Coffee Co-Op

The Dumerso washing station is situated in the heart of the Gedeo Zone, a region globally renowned for producing some of the most complex and floral Arabica coffees. The facility serves as a critical processing hub for smallholder farmers in the surrounding area, who typically cultivate coffee on small plots ranging from 0.5 to 5 hectares. These farmers deliver their ripe cherries to the station, where the coffee is processed to meet the rigorous standards required for the specialty market, often achieving Grade 1 status.

The operation is currently led by the sister team of CEO Hirut Birhanu and Manager Mahder Birhanu. Their leadership has been defined by a commitment to quality and social impact, particularly through the empowerment of women within the coffee industry. The station employs hundreds of individuals during the harvest season, with a significant majority of the workforce being women. This focus on gender equity and direct market access has become a hallmark of the Dumerso brand, distinguishing it within the competitive Yirgacheffe landscape.

Historically, the Dumerso operation has faced significant challenges, including periods of regional instability that led to the destruction and looting of the facility. Despite these setbacks, the Birhanu family has rebuilt and expanded their influence, maintaining a focus on both traditional washed processing and the production of high-quality natural lots. The station is known for producing coffee that exhibits the classic Yirgacheffe profile, characterized by delicate floral notes, bergamot, and bright, tea-like acidity.

While some historical records refer to a 'Dumerso Cooperative' associated with the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU), the modern Dumerso washing station is widely recognized as a private family-led enterprise. The station works with a network of smallholder farmers who cultivate a mix of local landraces and improved JARC varieties. These varieties are grown at high altitudes, often exceeding 1,900 meters above sea level, which contributes to the slow maturation and high density of the beans.

Processing at Dumerso is meticulous, involving careful sorting of parchment and controlled fermentation. The station has also pursued certifications such as Organic and Rainforest Alliance, reflecting a commitment to sustainable agricultural practices. Beyond standard processing, the team has explored innovative avenues, such as the production of cascara, further diversifying the value they provide to the local coffee economy.

For roasters and consumers, Dumerso represents the pinnacle of Ethiopian specialty coffee traceability. By maintaining direct relationships with international importers and roasters, the station ensures that the value generated by their high-scoring lots is better reflected in the prices paid to the smallholder farmers. This model of transparency and quality-focused processing has solidified Dumerso's reputation as a benchmark for excellence in the Gedeo Zone.
