The story
The Dumerso washing station was originally established in 1998 but remained inactive for several years. In 2010, Hirut Berhanu and her sister Mahder Berhanu acquired the site and transformed it into a functional processing facility. Since 2013, the station has operated as a hub for hundreds of local smallholder farmers in the Yirgacheffe region.
Challenges
Coffee production in the region is vital to the local economy, making it essential for farmers to receive fair prices for their crops. The station manages a large network of smallholder farmers, requiring careful oversight to maintain quality standards.
Innovations
The station has implemented projects to improve sustainability, such as converting coffee parchment waste into pressed firewood. Additionally, the operation is notable for its workforce, which consists of 95% women.
