Coffea arabica var. Sarchimor

Coffea arabica var. Sarchimor is not a single, uniform variety but rather a collection of related types sharing a common genetic lineage. Developed in Portugal around 1967 at the Coffee Rust Research Center (CIFC), the primary goal of the Sarchimor breeding program was to create a plant capable of withstanding the devastating effects of coffee leaf rust (CLR), a fungal disease that has historically decimated coffee plantations worldwide.

The genetic foundation of Sarchimor is a cross between the Villa Sarchi variety—a dwarf mutation of Bourbon known for its high quality—and the Timor Hybrid. The Timor Hybrid itself is a natural cross between Arabica and Robusta, which provides the essential genetic markers for rust resistance. By introducing this Robusta-derived resistance into the Arabica genome, breeders created a plant that could thrive in regions where rust pressure is high.

Because Sarchimor represents a series of selections rather than a single, stable cultivar, its performance and cup quality can vary significantly depending on the specific breeding program and the environment in which it is grown. While it is highly valued for its agronomic resilience, some cuppers have noted that certain Sarchimor selections can exhibit a 'green' or vegetal character if not managed carefully during cultivation and processing.

In practice, Sarchimor is a vital tool for farmers in regions prone to leaf rust. It allows producers to maintain productivity without the heavy reliance on chemical fungicides that might be required for more susceptible varieties like Typica or Bourbon. For the specialty coffee industry, the challenge remains in selecting the best-performing Sarchimor lines that offer both the necessary disease resistance and the complex, desirable flavor profiles that specialty consumers demand.
