Ownership transparency

Who actually owns your coffee?

A shelf of different bags can be one owner. This is our map of the US coffee brands we document, grouped by the company that ultimately holds them, with every claim traced to the sources on the brand file it came from.

Quick answer

Of the 2,220 US coffee brands in our directory, 31 name a corporate parent. 17 belong to large corporations, 95 to mid-size multi-brand groups, and 762 are recorded as independent. Ownership is documented from public sources, and where we could not document it we say so rather than guess.

The real story

Specialty coffee built its identity on the idea of the small, independent roaster who buys the lot, knows the farmer and roasts to order. Consolidation did not erase that; it absorbed it. The same roastery keeps its name, its packaging and often its staff after a larger company buys the majority stake, because the brand is the asset being purchased.

What changes after an acquisition is rarely the label. It is who sets green coffee budgets, who owns the importer relationships, who decides which origins stay on the list, and whose transparency reporting the company answers to. Those are exactly the decisions that determine whether a producer gets a multi-year contract or a one-off purchase.

None of that makes an owned brand's coffee worse. Big owners can fund better equipment, longer contracts and more consistent roasting than a two-person roastery. It does mean that "we are a small independent roaster" is a claim worth checking, and that supporting independent businesses is a choice you can only make when you know the difference.

The four ownership states we record
Independent
762

Owner-operated or privately held by the people who run it. No documented corporate parent. Independence describes ownership, not quality, sourcing or roast style.

Mid-size group
95

Held by a multi-brand coffee company or regional group rather than a single founder. Often keeps the roastery's name, staff and packaging while sourcing and finance move up a level.

Large corporation
17

Owned by a global food, beverage or consumer-goods company, usually with other coffee brands in the same portfolio. Buying power and reporting obligations change at this scale.

Not verified
20

We could not document ownership from public sources. We would rather show this than guess, because an ownership claim that turns out to be wrong is worse than an honest blank.

Corporate families

Ownership disclosure — ownership is recorded from public sources on each brand file, with the links used. Where a parent could not be documented the brand is marked not verified rather than assumed independent. Acquisitions can be announced and completed months apart, so a record can lag a transaction.
