Erna Knutsen

Erna Knutsen (1921–2018) is widely recognized as the "godmother of specialty coffee." In the 1970s, while working as a secretary at a coffee brokerage in San Francisco, she began to notice that small lots of high-quality coffee were being overlooked by the large commercial roasters who prioritized volume and price over flavor. She began to advocate for these "specialty" coffees, which were grown in unique microclimates and possessed distinct flavor profiles.

Knutsen’s vision was simple but revolutionary: she believed that coffee should be treated as a premium product, much like fine wine. She coined the term "specialty coffee" to describe these high-quality beans and founded her own company, Knutsen Coffees, to import them. Her work helped create a market for small-batch roasters who were interested in sourcing unique, high-quality beans from specific farms and regions. This shift in focus from commodity to quality is the foundation of the entire specialty coffee movement.

Throughout her career, Knutsen was a tireless advocate for the coffee producer. She believed that by paying higher prices for better quality, the industry could create a more sustainable future for farmers.
