Q Grader

Quick definition

A Q Grader is a trained, licensed coffee-quality evaluator who completes a rigorous professional qualification. Since October 2025 the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), rather than the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI), has administered the updated Q Grader Program. Its curriculum uses the SCA Coffee Value Assessment to distinguish measurable sensory traits, quality preferences, green-coffee properties, and information about the coffee.

What is a Q Grader? A Q Grader is a coffee professional who holds a license demonstrating competence in structured coffee assessment. Q Graders help producers, buyers, exporters, and roasters describe coffee consistently and identify meaningful sensory and quality differences.

Who administers the program? The Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) operated the original Q program for many years. As announced by the Specialty Coffee Association, management transitioned to the SCA on October 1, 2025, with an updated course aligned with its Coffee Value Assessment (CVA). Calling the current license 'CQI-certified' without mentioning the change would be misleading.

What do graders evaluate? The CVA separates four complementary assessments: physical characteristics, descriptive sensory attributes, affective quality judgments, and extrinsic information such as provenance. The updated Q Grader curriculum teaches evaluation across these dimensions. A Q Grader's judgment is skilled evidence from a defined tasting context, not a universal, permanent declaration of how good every future roast or harvest must taste.

Does a Q Grader assign every specialty coffee one official score? No. Historical 100-point cupping scores remain familiar, but current SCA practice is broader than one number. A Q Grader license should not be interpreted as an automatic certification of an entire farm, brand, or coffee offering. For our readers, evaluation claims should name the assessor, method, coffee lot, and date when those details are available.

Why this matters

A Q Grader is a person with an assessment credential, not a certification automatically attached to every coffee they encounter. The SCA introduced its updated Coffee Value Assessment-based Q Grader program on October 1, 2025, following a transition from the Coffee Quality Institute. The new approach distinguishes what the evaluator perceives from the evaluator's preferences and what is known about a coffee's origin. That makes context especially important whenever someone quotes a coffee score.

What to verify

When you see a Q Grader claim, ask which coffee lot was tested, when the assessment took place, which framework was used, and who conducted it. A credential does not prove that a roaster's current bag received an independent score.
