According to the most popular legend, he was a Sufi mystic and physician who was exiled from the city of Mocha to the remote mountains of Ousab. While wandering in the wilderness, starving and desperate, he discovered a small, bright red fruit growing on a shrub. He attempted to eat the fruit, but found it too bitter. He then tried to roast the seeds, but they were too hard. Finally, he boiled the seeds in water, creating a dark, fragrant, and energizing decoction.

This beverage not only sustained him but also provided him with the energy to continue his prayers and healing work. When the people of Mocha heard of his miraculous recovery and the "magical" drink he had discovered, they invited him back to the city, where he was hailed as a saint.
