The journey from seed to a harvestable coffee cherry is a test of patience for any coffee farmer. The process begins in a nursery, where seeds are germinated and nurtured for about 12 months until they reach a height of roughly 40 centimeters. Once the seedling is strong enough, it is transplanted to its permanent location on the farm, where it enters a juvenile phase of growth.

For the next 3 to 4 years, the tree focuses its energy on establishing a robust root system and dense foliage. During this time, the tree is not yet ready for commercial production. It requires consistent care, fertilization, and protection from environmental stressors. Many young trees do not survive this period, necessitating constant replanting and maintenance by the farm staff to ensure the long-term viability of the crop.

Once the tree reaches maturity, usually between years 4 and 5, it begins to bear fruit. However, the cycle of coffee farming is not a simple annual event. After the tree flowers, it takes approximately 6 to 9 months for the cherries to ripen. This maturation timeline is heavily influenced by the specific coffee variety, the altitude of the farm, and local climate conditions. Higher altitudes often result in slower maturation, which can lead to more complex flavor profiles in the final cup.

In practice, this means that a coffee farmer is investing years of labor and capital before seeing a single return on their investment.
