What is the Coffee Value Assessment?
The Coffee Value Assessment is the SCA's newer framework for describing coffee value beyond a single score. It evaluates the cup, the physical beans, and how the coffee is perceived by consumers — giving a richer, fairer picture than one number alone.
Sources show where the underlying information came from. They do not automatically make a claim correct, so disputed history, evolving science and uncertain claims should be labeled as such in the explanation itself.
The classic 100-point scale answers 'how good is the cup?' but not 'how desirable is this coffee?' A dark, chocolatey crowd-pleaser and a delicate floral competition lot can both be excellent at different things — a single score flattens that. The CVA addresses it by combining three assessments: sensory (the cup), physical (defects, moisture, ), and affective (how much people actually like it). It launched in 2024 after years of development and debate. Critics worry it complicates a simple standard; supporters argue it finally reflects how value actually works in the market. Either way, 80+ Q scores remain the industry's common currency — the CVA adds context on top.
