Guchienda

The story

Guchienda is a third-generation family farm located on the slopes of Mt. Kenya in Embu County. The estate was established in the early 1950s after the local Embu community elders allocated a 12-acre parcel of land to the founder, Elikana Njiru Guchienda. Today, the farm is managed by Elikana's grandsons, Edwin and Benson Mati, alongside their mother, Esther Wanjiku Kamau.

Challenges

The farm operates within a Kenyan coffee industry that has historically faced difficulties with transparency due to the traditional reliance on large, centralized washing stations.

Innovations

The estate focuses on direct-trade relationships to improve transparency and quality control, including the ability to perform specific variety separations and implement targeted soil health initiatives.
