Guchienda Estate

The story

The Guchienda Estate was established in the early 1950s when the Embu community elders allocated a 12-acre parcel of land to founder Elikana Njiru Guchienda. It is currently a third-generation family farm managed by Elikana's daughter, Esther Wanjiku Kamau, and her sons, Edwin and Benson Mati.

Challenges

The farm operates in a region where coffee is traditionally processed through large, centralized washing stations, which can limit transparency and direct market access for individual estates.

Innovations

The estate has moved toward a direct-trade model to improve transparency and quality control, and it has successfully implemented variety-specific separations, such as their award-winning pure SL28 lots.
