The story

The factory operates under the umbrella of the Rumukia Coffee Farmer Society. It serves smallholder farmers located in the Karatina region, positioned near the foothills of Mt. Kenya and the Aberdares.

Challenges

Smallholder farmers in this region contend with climate change, market price volatility, and limited access to financing. They also manage ongoing threats from pests and diseases, specifically coffee berry disease and coffee leaf rust.

Innovations

The factory has introduced natural processing alongside traditional washed methods. It also utilizes soaking pits to recycle water used during processing to improve environmental sustainability.
