Karagoto Factory

The story

Karagoto Factory is a wet mill located in Nyeri County, Kenya, serving as one of four processing facilities owned by the Tekangu Farmers Cooperative Society. The factory supports over 1,700 smallholder farmers who typically manage small plots of land to grow coffee alongside subsistence crops like maize and bananas.

Challenges

Smallholder farmers face the difficulty of managing very small plots of land, typically around 0.5 hectares, while balancing coffee production with other essential food crops.

Innovations

The cooperative employs an agronomist to provide members with coffee and native tree seedlings, promoting better agricultural practices and sustainability.
