Founded in 2015 by Rachel Taber and Doug Hewitt, 1951 Coffee Company is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Berkeley, California. The company derives its name from the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention, which established the foundational international guidelines for the protection of refugees. The organization was created to address the specific employment barriers faced by newcomers to the United States, aiming to provide a pathway toward sustainable, professional careers rather than the '4D' jobs—dull, dirty, difficult, and dead-end—that refugees are often funneled into upon arrival.
