Barista Parlor is a Nashville-based coffee roaster and cafe operator founded in 2012 by Andy Mumma. The company is recognized for its focus on high-quality specialty coffee, distinctively designed retail spaces, and its transition from a multi-roaster model to an in-house roasting program.
Barista Parlor was established in 2012 in East Nashville by owner Andy Mumma. The company initially gained prominence as a multi-roaster cafe, featuring selections from notable specialty roasters such as Counter Culture, Intelligentsia, and Stumptown. This approach helped introduce Nashville’s coffee consumers to a broader range of specialty coffee profiles and brewing methods, contributing to the city's growing reputation for elevated coffee culture.
Following the success of its flagship location, the company expanded its footprint across Nashville, opening several architecturally distinct cafes. These spaces often featured renovated industrial settings and interactive art installations, which became a hallmark of the brand's identity. The design and branding of these locations have been a collaborative effort between Mumma and local designer Bryce McCloud of Isle of Printing.
In the years following its inception, Barista Parlor transitioned from a multi-roaster model to producing its own coffee. This shift was driven by a desire for greater control over the sourcing, sampling, and roasting processes. By managing its own roasting program, the company aimed to ensure consistency and quality across its various retail outposts, eventually establishing its own roasting facility in Nashville.
Sourcing remains a central component of the company's operations. Barista Parlor emphasizes a "farm direct" philosophy, seeking to establish relationships that support better wages and living conditions for coffee producers. This commitment to the supply chain is framed by the company as a means to secure higher-quality green coffee while fostering sustainable economic outcomes for farmers.
Innovation has also extended to the company's product presentation. In 2016, Barista Parlor introduced unique, resealable, foil-lined coffee boxes designed to maintain freshness through a one-way valve system. This packaging reflected the company's broader focus on combining aesthetic design with functional quality control, a theme consistent with its approach to cafe architecture and coffee preparation.
As of early 2026, the company has undergone a strategic consolidation of its retail operations. While closing several locations due to rising operational costs, Barista Parlor continues to maintain a presence in key Nashville sites, including the W Hotel in The Gulch, the Nashville International Airport, and its original East Nashville location. The company continues to operate as a roaster and retailer, focusing on its core offerings of pour-over coffee and house-made pastries.
