Batdorf & Bronson

Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters was established in 1986 by Dick Batdorf and Shannon Bronson in Olympia, Washington. As one of the region's first specialty coffee roasters, the company played a foundational role in shaping the Pacific Northwest's coffee culture. In 1990, the company was acquired by Larry and Cherie Challain, who had previously opened the Dancing Goats Espresso Company in Olympia in 1988. Under the Challains' ownership, the brand expanded its footprint significantly, opening a second roasting facility in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1994 to better serve national wholesale and retail markets.

Throughout its growth, the company became known for a sourcing philosophy centered on direct relationships with coffee farmers. This approach was intended to ensure both quality control and environmental sustainability. A documented example of this practice included sourcing Grade 1 natural-processed beans from the Kayon Mountain farm in Ethiopia, owned by Ato Esmael and his family. The company maintained a rigorous production schedule, often roasting to order to ensure freshness for its wholesale partners and retail cafes.

In March 2022, the company underwent a major corporate rebranding, consolidating its identity under the name Dancing Goats Coffee to unify its roasting and retail operations. This transition was intended to simplify the brand's presence in the market. Shortly thereafter, the company was acquired by the St. Louis-based Kaldi's Coffee. This period of corporate restructuring saw the Batdorf & Bronson name largely retired from active branding in favor of the Dancing Goats moniker.

The trajectory of the brand shifted again in early 2025 when Kaldi's Coffee sold its West Coast operations to Sumner, Washington-based Dillanos Coffee Roasters. As part of the acquisition agreement, Dillanos moved to revive the Batdorf & Bronson brand, citing its status as an iconic name in the coffee community. The relaunch, officially announced in August 2025, involved a visual redesign while maintaining the core product offerings that had defined the company for decades.

While some specific blend names were adjusted due to trademark considerations—most notably the transition of the 'Dancing Goats Blend' to 'Legacy Blend'—the company emphasized that the relaunch was intended to honor the brand's historical roots in Olympia. The revived brand currently serves wholesale partners and direct-to-consumer customers across the western United States, positioning itself as a continuation of the legacy established in 1986.

Today, the brand stands as a case study in the evolution of American specialty coffee, moving from a local pioneer to a multi-regional operation, and eventually undergoing a corporate revival. Its history reflects broader trends in the industry, including the shift toward direct sourcing, the consolidation of regional roasters, and the enduring value of brand heritage in the specialty coffee market.
