Beansmith Coffee Roasters was established in 2010 as a collaborative venture between co-founders Chris Smith and Jason Burkum. Based in the Omaha, Nebraska metropolitan area, specifically operating out of La Vista, the company quickly positioned itself as a key player in the regional specialty coffee scene. Jason Burkum, a former music industry professional, transitioned into the coffee industry to lead the roasting operations, bringing a meticulous approach to the craft that defined the company's output for several years.

The company gained recognition for its commitment to seasonal sourcing, prioritizing the acquisition of fresh, vibrant green coffees. During its tenure, Beansmith was frequently cited as a representative of Nebraska's growing specialty coffee culture, earning mentions in national publications for its efforts to bring high-quality, single-origin coffees to the heartland. Their product range included both single-origin offerings, such as washed Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, and signature blends like the Phoenix, which was noted for its distinct flavor profile.

Operational practices at Beansmith emphasized precision in the roasting process. Burkum was known for adjusting heat application throughout the roast cycle—specifically applying higher pressure at the start to manage moisture content before softening the heat to develop natural sweetness. This technical approach was intended to highlight the inherent characteristics of the coffee, such as the acidity and floral notes typical of high-elevation Ethiopian beans.

Beyond its roasting operations, Beansmith maintained a retail presence in Omaha, including a location in the city's Old Market district. The company served as a training ground for coffee professionals in the region, fostering a community-focused environment that emphasized product quality and education. In 2014, the company brought on Ian Wiese to lead its coffee program. Despite its established presence, Beansmith Coffee Roasters ceased operations in late 2017. Following the closure, the company's assets were acquired by Ian Wiese, who subsequently launched a new roasting and retail venture, Rally Coffee Co., in 2018. This transition marked the end of Beansmith’s eight-year run, though its influence remained a foundational element for the subsequent generation of specialty coffee businesses in the Omaha area.
