Cirque Coffee is a Tulsa-based specialty coffee roaster known for its experimental approach to processing and light-roast profiles. Founded in 2016, the company gained recognition for its innovative shipping-container drive-thru model and its commitment to sourcing high-quality, transparently traded coffees before being acquired by Topeca Coffee in 2024.
Cirque Coffee was established in 2016 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by founders Garrett O'Dell and John Pierce. Driven by a shared interest in the technical aspects of coffee brewing and roasting, the duo sought to create a brand that prioritized flavor experimentation and specialty-grade quality. Austin Fogt later joined the partnership, helping to scale the company's operations and refine its strategic direction as it transitioned from a home-based passion project into a recognized local institution.
The company became particularly well-known for its unconventional retail approach during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, the team launched a drive-thru model utilizing a repurposed shipping container at 14th Street and Utica Avenue in Tulsa. This design was intended to maximize operational efficiency while maintaining the high standards of a specialty cafe, allowing the brand to serve its customer base effectively during a period of significant industry disruption.
Cirque’s sourcing philosophy centers on building relationships with producers and importers who prioritize quality and fair compensation. The roastery is known for its preference for lighter roast profiles, which the team believes best highlights the unique characteristics of the coffee. Their product lineup frequently features experimental processing methods, such as anaerobic fermentation and co-fermentation, catering to a demographic of coffee enthusiasts interested in distinct, non-traditional flavor profiles.
In terms of operations, the company maintained a rigorous standard for freshness, typically shipping beans within one to seven days of the roast date to ensure optimal degassing. This attention to detail extended to their product labeling and branding, which often leaned into a playful, creative aesthetic intended to make specialty coffee feel more accessible and less conventional to the average consumer.
In 2024, a significant transition occurred when founders O'Dell and Fogt decided to pursue other professional interests. They sold the Cirque Coffee brand to Topeca Coffee, a fellow Tulsa-based specialty coffee leader. The acquisition was framed as a strategic partnership, with the companies citing shared values regarding sustainability, transparency, and quality as the primary drivers for the transition.
Following the acquisition, Cirque’s roasting operations were moved to the Topeca Roastery. The brand continues to operate under its original identity, with Cirque’s head roaster, Elise, collaborating with Topeca’s director of coffee, Ross, to maintain the brand's established flavor profiles and sourcing standards. This integration allowed the Cirque brand to leverage Topeca’s infrastructure while preserving the experimental spirit that defined its early years.
