The company was officially founded in 2012, initially operating as a small-scale venture where the founders bagged coffee in a garage and distributed samples at local farmers' markets in Virginia. This grassroots approach eventually led to retail placements in local shops, including the well-known Arlington establishment, The Java Shack.

In 2015, the company acquired The Java Shack, a move that allowed the team to exert greater control over their supply chain, from sourcing and roasting to final preparation. This acquisition served as a foundational step in their transition from a small roaster to a broader beverage company. By 2016, they opened a flagship cafe in Pentagon City, which remains a central hub for their retail operations and a showcase for their specialty coffee offerings.

The company’s most significant pivot occurred with the development of its "coffee-as-a-service" model, specifically focusing on nitro cold brew for corporate environments. Recognizing a gap in the quality of office coffee, Commonwealth Joe began installing kegerator systems in workplaces, providing a turn-key solution that included regular maintenance and resupply. This model proved highly successful, allowing the company to expand its footprint from the Washington D.C. metro area into cities such as New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Baltimore.

To support this rapid expansion, the company secured significant capital investment. In 2017, Commonwealth Joe closed a $2.5 million seed funding round led by the investment fund Mendacre, bringing their total disclosed funding to approximately $4 million at that time. These funds were explicitly earmarked for increasing production capacity, enhancing product quality, and scaling their nitro cold brew operations to meet the growing demand for high-quality office amenities.

Operationally, Commonwealth Joe distinguishes itself by managing the entire lifecycle of its coffee products.
