Coopedota cooperative

Founded in 1960 by a group of 96 producers, Coopedota—officially known as Cooperativa de Caficultores de Dota R.L.—is located in the Los Santos region of Costa Rica. Over the decades, it has grown into a significant organization with approximately 800 active members. The cooperative operates in the high-altitude Tarrazú growing zone, an area celebrated for its mineral-rich soil and ideal climate, which consistently produces high-quality, award-winning coffee. From its humble beginnings with a modest budget, the cooperative has evolved into a modern, forward-thinking entity that serves as a cornerstone of the local economy in Santa María de Dota.

Coopedota is most widely recognized for its leadership in environmental innovation. In 2011, it achieved the distinction of being the world’s first coffee producer to receive carbon-neutral certification under the PAS 2060 standard. This achievement was the result of a long-term sustainability strategy that began in 1998. The cooperative implemented rigorous changes across its value chain, including replacing 95 percent of the firewood used in drying processes with coffee husks, reducing power consumption by over 35 percent, and cutting water usage by 80 percent while eliminating discharge into local rivers.

The cooperative’s commitment to sustainability is rooted in the concept of 'eco-competitiveness,' which seeks to balance environmental responsibility with economic viability for its farmers. By generating energy from organic waste and utilizing non-chemical fertilizers, Coopedota has demonstrated that sustainable practices can lead to better returns for producers. This approach has been essential in maintaining the support of its members, as the cooperative ensures that environmental improvements translate into tangible economic advantages for the families who rely on coffee farming.

In terms of production and quality, Coopedota is highly regarded for its modern processing infrastructure. In 2006, the cooperative installed a dedicated micromill, which allowed them to isolate and process small, high-quality lots from individual farmers. This capability has been instrumental in attracting specialty roasters who seek traceable, high-scoring coffees. During the peak of the harvest, the micromill produces two distinct micro-lots per day, ensuring that the unique characteristics of the region's terroir are preserved and highlighted for the end consumer.

Beyond processing, Coopedota provides extensive technical assistance to its members, helping them manage their plantations with a focus on both agronomic and social sustainability. The cooperative’s influence extends to the local community through various projects, including ongoing research into biofuels and gasification. Their commitment to excellence is also reflected in their support for professional development, such as hosting barista competitions that adhere to World Coffee Events standards, judged by members of the Costa Rican Specialty Coffee Association.
