Founded as a family-owned business, the company grew from a single location on the Milwaukee River into a prominent regional brand with multiple cafes across the Greater Milwaukee area, including locations in Cedarburg, Mequon, Grafton, Menomonee Falls, Shorewood, and downtown Milwaukee. The company’s roasting operations were formalized in 2008 when the owners sought professional training from Willem Boot, a recognized expert in the specialty coffee industry. This technical approach allows the roastery to develop specific flavor profiles for their single-origin offerings and signature blends.

In early 2026, Fiddleheads Coffee Roasters was acquired by the FairWave Specialty Coffee Collective, a Kansas City-based organization backed by the private equity firm Great Range Capital. This acquisition marked a significant transition for the family-owned business, as it joined a portfolio of other specialty coffee brands, including Milwaukee’s Anodyne Coffee Roasting Company, Ceremony Coffee Roasters, and Spyhouse Coffee Roasters.

Following the acquisition, the company has maintained its operational independence under the FairWave model, which is designed to allow brands to retain their unique identities while sharing resources and infrastructure. According to company leadership and the new owners, the transition is intended to preserve the legacy and operational standards that Fiddleheads established over its three decades of independent growth, with no immediate changes planned for its retail cafe experiences.
