The Kayon Mountain Coffee Farm is a significant private estate located in the Odo Shakiso district of the Guji zone in southern Ethiopia. Founded in 2012 by Ismael Hassen Aredo and his family, the farm spans 500 hectares, with approximately 300 hectares currently under coffee cultivation. The property is geographically unique, as it straddles the border between the villages of Taro and Sewana, situated roughly 510 kilometers south of Addis Ababa.

Ismael Hassen manages a substantial workforce, overseeing 25 permanent full-time employees and up to 300 seasonal workers during the harvest period. Because the farm operates in a region where it must compete with local mining industries for labor, the family has implemented a strategy of paying higher wages to incentivize consistent, skilled seasonal help. Beyond wages, the farm management provides free transportation services and has funded the construction of local schools and administrative buildings for the surrounding community.

The farm is notable for its vertical integration, as it has built its own wet and dry milling facilities on-site. This allows the Hassen family to maintain direct oversight of the entire post-harvest process, from initial cherry processing to final quality management and export preparation. This level of control is essential for producing the high-quality, washed heirloom lots for which the estate is known, often characterized by floral and tea-like profiles with notes of stone fruit.

Cultivation at Kayon Mountain focuses on regional heirloom varieties, which are indigenous to the Ethiopian forest landscape. These plants thrive at the farm's high elevation, which ranges between 1,900 and 2,200 meters above sea level. By managing their own milling and processing, the family ensures that the specific characteristics of these heirloom cultivars are preserved, resulting in a consistent product that has gained recognition among specialty coffee roasters globally.
