Sway Coffee Roasters was established in 2019 in Kansas City, Missouri, by the ownership group behind the local institution McLain’s Bakery + Markets. The company was born out of a desire to exert greater control over the coffee program served within the bakery’s various locations, transitioning from using external wholesalers to roasting their own beans in-house. Initially operating a small roaster in the Waldo neighborhood, the company quickly outgrew its early production capacity, leading to a move into a dedicated 4,000-square-foot roasting and cafe space in the Rosedale/Westwood area of Kansas City, Kansas, in early 2022.

The company’s flagship location, which opened to the public in September 2022, serves as the hub for their roasting operations, utilizing a Diedrich roaster to process their inventory. While the brand maintains a strong local presence through its partnership with McLain’s Bakery and Markets in locations such as Waldo, Overland Park, Shawnee, and Lawrence, it also operates as an independent entity with a national shipping program and a wholesale division.

Sway’s sourcing philosophy centers on direct-trade relationships with producers and cooperatives. A primary example of this commitment is their partnership with the Misión San Lucas Toliman in Guatemala. The mission operates a program called Café Juan Ana, which seeks to bypass the low market prices often forced upon local farmers by large exporters. By paying double the market rate for high-quality crops, the mission aims to provide economic stability for the more than 100 Guatemalan men and women involved in the cooperative.

Beyond their Guatemalan offerings, the roaster maintains a rotating selection of single-origin coffees and blends, including beans sourced from regions such as Ethiopia, specifically the Guji zone. Their product lineup is diverse, ranging from light-roast cold brew offerings to darker espresso blends like their 'Dark + Stormy.' The company emphasizes a 'down-to-earth' approach to specialty coffee, balancing technical brewing methods—such as manual pour-overs using Kalita Wave drippers—with accessible cafe service.

In practice, the company functions as both a production roastery and a community-focused cafe. Their menu reflects a standard specialty coffee repertoire, including cortados, cappuccinos, and lattes, alongside a selection of food items. The business model is designed to support both the retail consumer and the wholesale market, ensuring that their roasted coffee is available both at their own storefront and through various local stockists.
