Quick answer — what is Wayward Coffee?

Wayward Coffee Co. is a Dallas-based coffee company founded in 2019 that prioritizes community-focused retail and multi-roaster service. Originally launched as a mobile coffee cart, the company has expanded into brick-and-mortar locations and an in-house roasting facility, emphasizing quality, rotating guest roasters, and local engagement.

The real story

Wayward Coffee Co. was established in Dallas, Texas, in 2019 by founders Noah Irby and Trevin Willison. The company originated from a desire to reshape the local coffee culture, beginning as a mobile service operating out of a 1975 Volkswagen bus named 'Floyd.' This initial phase focused on pop-up service within the Bishop Arts District, allowing the founders to build a customer base while maintaining their existing employment before transitioning to a full-time business model.

Following the success of their mobile operations, the founders sought to establish a permanent presence. In 2020, they opened their first brick-and-mortar location in the Northwest Oak Cliff neighborhood. This expansion was driven by a commitment to creating an inclusive, community-oriented space, a mission that remained central to their operations even as they navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the company grew, it expanded its footprint to include a second location in the Dallas Design District. Beyond retail service, Wayward Coffee Co. has developed an internal infrastructure that includes a dedicated roasting facility, a tasting lab, and a coffee supplies store located at 939 N. Edgefield Ave. This facility serves as the hub for their production and quality control efforts.

Wayward operates primarily as a multi-roaster coffee company. While they maintain their own roasting operations, they are known for featuring a rotating selection of guest roasters from across the United States, including brands such as Cat & Cloud, Little Wolf, Mae, and Hydrangea. This approach allows the company to offer a diverse range of flavor profiles and brewing experiences to their customers, ranging from drip coffee to specialized espresso preparations.

The company’s service philosophy emphasizes handmade products and the use of in-house syrups, including vanilla, lavender, and seasonal options. Their menu is designed to cater to both casual drinkers and coffee enthusiasts, offering various preparation methods such as flash-brewed iced coffee, pour-overs, and traditional espresso-based drinks. They also incorporate non-dairy alternatives like oat and almond milk to accommodate diverse dietary preferences.

Beyond coffee service, Wayward has integrated itself into the local Dallas community by providing spaces for networking and social interaction. Their locations often feature community rooms available for reservation and host events, such as wine club gatherings, which distinguish them from standard coffee shops. By balancing their role as a roaster with their identity as a community-centric cafe, Wayward Coffee Co. continues to function as a hub for the Dallas specialty coffee scene.
